2004When Stephanie was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia, an inherited disease that affects the muscles and heart, she could’ve easily let her condition keep her down. Instead, she’s fighting it head-on by staying active. Stephanie has found a welcoming, supportive community at the Y, and says she works out not only for herself—but also to inspire others. (Mission accomplished.)

2004Too many people think of exercising as something you do solely for yourself. In truth, staying healthy also lets you do more for the people around you. Exhibit A: Erin. Her rigorous workout regimen (she’s competed in triathlons and marathons) gives her the energy to keep up with her three (very energetic) children. As she says, knowingly, “If mama isn’t happy, no one is happy.”

2004Ask virtually any parent, and they’ll tell you that “staying healthy” and “spending time with the kids” are two goals at the top of their list. Fortunately, Julie and her ten year-old son have a way to do both. At the YMCA, they’ve discovered a place they can stay active together—finding not only a healthy, nurturing environment, but also a common ground.

2007Serita, like millions of other adults who never learned how to swim, always wondered if she’d missed her chance. However, since joining the Y, she’s tackled everything from Hip-Hop Aerobics to Zumba, losing ten pounds in the process. And, just as importantly, she’s mustered up the courage to finally take swim lessons—showing it’s never too late to jump in.

1974To those who think they’re too old to be active: Sorry to burst your bubble. Lora may be 100 years young, but she still does Yoga and spends the warmer months swimming at her local YMCA (8 laps, in case you were wondering). It’s this kind of activity that she and her doctors credit for her continued good health. Lora is proof positive that age really is just a number.

2006Summer. For some kids it means an uninterrupted smorgasbord of TV, video games and...more TV. For Olivia and her siblings Jacob and Hannah, it means swimming, horseback riding and rock climbing—to name just a few of the things they do every year at camp. They’re having so much fun, we’re tempted not to tell them they’re also learning values and skills that’ll last a lifetime.

MosesAge:

2006It would have been easy for Moses to dial back his active lifestyle. A history of running marathons had taken its toll on his knees, and he was now facing a lengthy period of physical therapy. Instead, Moses turned to the Y, building back his strength with the help of our bikes, weight machines—and community. He was soon able to end his therapy, proving you can’t keep a good man (sitting) down.

2009After gradually becoming more and more sedentary (and looking the part), Amanda finally decided she’d had enough. She joined the YMCA because of its affordability, support system and family atmosphere (she’s a single mom). The results have been dramatic: she’s lost 80 pounds and become a fixture—and source of inspiration—at her local branch.

Trenda has certainly found that at the YMCA, making new friends and feeling like “a part of something bigger.” She’s also found a wide range of activities and classes that have helped her get healthier and gain confidence. And the weight loss part? An amazing 80 pounds (and counting).
